Today is my Birthday! I am 6 years old!!! ( 20 something in big people years)

I was so excited this morning. After having breakfast, I got to open my birthday card from Daddy and then the funest part. Opening my presents!

I love tearing open the paper to see what is inside. So exciting!

I got a felt rope pull, a rope pull, nylabone, some cookies - very yummy in my tummy, and one of my favorite mousies with the electronic squeak! I ran around with that for quite a while before I managed to make it stop squeaking.. Ha ha ha ha ha!

I hope you had a fun Easter. I certainly did.

I got to hunt for eggs in my realm, and when I found them that hat cookies and treats inside. Hmmmm Yummy in my tummy!

The Easter Puppy also left me an Easter basket with some more eggs filled with treats and cookies, an new nylabone to chew and a cook Easter Bunny toy to play with.

How are you all??

I had a fun weekend, Sunday was the annual Dog Day in the Park. I love sniffing out this event as I get to get a new Police K-9 card and meet the Police Officers. they all like the way I give my best modeling face when it is time to take my photo!

I also love visiting all the exhibitors and vendors as I get to sample all kinds of new cookies and treats! I also got a new squeaky toy and got to run around in the free run zone.

Once I got home I was so tired I had to take a nap in the sun.

Hi 'Reese'e Fans!

I wanted to let you know I had a really fun time the other week when my cousins Emma and Martha came to visit. It was just a short stay, but we all had such fun, and I enjoyed playing with them both. I also took them to eat lunch at my favorite marina restaurant, and also to play at my favorite dog park by the intra-coastal.

We all had a great time, and when they had to go home, it was all too soon. I hope to see them again real soon!!

I hope you had a fun Easter. I did. The Easter Puppy bounded by my house and left me an Easter Basket with all kinds of puppy treats in it, and later I will get the bunny toy to play with!!

I also went Easter Egg hunting in Reeses Realm. and I found eggs with puppy treats inside. I wasn't sure what to do at first, but once I realized that treats were in the eggs, I sniffed them out really quickly, and got eat the goodies inside. I found 3 eggs. It was such yummy fun!!

Hi everyone,

Today is my birthday. I am 5 today!!

When I woke up, I couldn't wait to see everyone and tell them it was my Birthday!

Mommy and Daddy already remembered, and had a card and birthday gifts for me!!

I love opening presents. Such fun!

I got a furry ball, a squirrel with a squeak in it, popcorn, mini bones and puppy chips that are REALLY yummy in my tummy!!

Earthquake Predictors
Since 373 BC when the ancient Greeks first noted that rats, weasels, snakes, and even centipedes fled the city of Helice days before the earth violently shook, people have believed that animals are able to predict earthquakes. When the Tsunami of 2004 devastated the countries along the Indian Ocean, it took the lives of hundreds of thousands of people, but animals faired remarkably well. The Chinese have long believed dogs and cats are able to predict quakes. In 1975, the city of Haicheng was evacuated days in advance of an earthquake based on the behavior of dogs and cats. An estimated 150,000 lives were saved. Stories like these lead many to believe that animals have some kind of sixth sense.

Many scientists are still skeptical about the ability of animals to detect earthquakes. It’s difficult to test and prove in a scientifically controlled environment. Most evidence for this phenomenon comes from anecdotes. People recall that their dog or cat had behaved strangely before an earthquake hit. The problem scientists have with that is, dogs or cats may act strangely at any given time. People take special note of it only after the fact, because a very memorable earthquake followed.

Scientists who do believe animals can sense earthquakes don’t always agree on the animals’ “method.” Are they picking up electromagnetic waves the earth emits before a quake? Are they smelling gases? Can they feel early tremors too subtle for our senses? How do they know?

A recent scientific study, conducted by Dr. Stanley Coren, author of many books on dog communication, found that some dogs can indeed detect an earthquake, and he believes he has determined how they do it, as well. They are using their remarkable sense of hearing. He presented his findings this past November at a Psychonomic Society meeting in Houston.

There were 193 dogs in this study done at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. An earthquake, with an epicenter in the Seattle area, caused shaking and damage in Vancouver. Twenty-four hours prior, half the dogs showed an increase in activity and anxiety. Fourteen of the dogs in the study were hearing impaired, and only one of them had an increase in anxiety. However, because this hearing-impaired dog was with a hearing dog that became anxious, it’s likely he was picking up on the other dog’s anxiety.

Dr. Coren believes that the dogs’ ability to hear at extraordinarily high frequencies allows them to pick up on the high-pitch sounds of rocks scraping and breaking beneath the earth, an event that precedes earthquakes. This idea was further supported by the finding that the dogs with floppy ears did not react as much as dogs with pointy ears. Floppy ears tend to block high-pitched sounds. Dogs with smaller head sizes were also better at picking up the sound than dogs with larger heads. It’s the same with other animals – elephants pick up low-frequency sounds well, while bats are better attuned to high frequencies.

So why do dogs become agitated when they hear rocks scraping underground? Do they understand its meaning? Do they know danger is imminent? Dr. Coren says no. It’s more likely that the sound to them is like nails on a chalkboard and they want to get away from it.

This could at least partially explain why animals survived the Tsunami, which was caused by an earthquake in the Indian Ocean. Although it’s likely there was also other sensory input that caused the animal exodus, it’s possible that those able to pick up on the initial high-frequency sounds fled from the ocean, and those that couldn’t, took their cues from the ones fleeing.

At Disney World, family's pets get to wish upon a star, too

Walt Disney World is going after pet owners who might want to stay at the resort if they know their dogs will be coddled with bedtime stories or their cats treated to snacks such as tuna on Ritz crackers.

"We will be able to provide wonderful experiences for pets," said Dennis Dolan, president and chief executive officer of Best Friends Pet Care Inc.

Dolan's Norwalk, Conn., company just got a contract from Disney to operate the resort's five existing kennels and to build a boarding center where dogs and cats can stay in two-room suites with patios and get all the pampering they have come to expect.

Walks? Sure. Runs on an obstacle course? If they wish. Ice cream snacks. Bottled water. Supervised socializing with other pets. Elevated beds with lambs-wool bedding. If special bedding is desired — even orthopedic beds — those, too, will be available.

For dogs used to curling up on a child's bed and drifting off to sleep as a parent reads a bedtime story, bedtime stories will be available. For those conditioned to nap in front of a TV, televisions can be provided. And they won't be playing just any TV shows; they'll have dog movies, like The Adventures of Milo and Otis or Homeward Bound.

"A lot of people leave their televisions or radios on at home during the day to keep their pets company. This is really an idea that came to us from our clients who wanted a more homelike setting for their pets," said Best Friends spokeswoman Debra Bennetts. "What we provide is luxury suites. … It's really for that person who wants to make sure that their pet is being pampered the way they get pampered at home."

Cats will get a different kind of pampering. Their "condos" will come with lofts. Their TVs will play videos of birds. They can have aquariums to watch.

Dolan said luxury boarding for pets has been emerging for years, and he considers his company to be one of the innovators. Best Friends has 44 other boarding centers nationwide. Most of the luxury features are available at most of them.

At those other Best Friends centers, basic boarding fees for dogs range from less than $25 to more than $40 a day, depending on the local market and the size of the dog. Luxury features, such as 10 minutes of cuddle time, can be purchased separately for $2 to $12 per feature or in packages that add $12 to $38 a day to the cost.

The company has not yet set its Disney World luxury rates. Current Disney fees run from $10 to $20 a night, depending on the pet. Those basic rates will go up after Best Friends starts taking over operations in January, perhaps starting at $20 a night, though the level of service will increase, too, Disney spokeswoman Zoraya Suarez said.

The vacation market has been waiting for such pet pampering, according to Rod Caborn, a spokesman for Ypartnership, a Maitland-based marketing firm that specializes in travel and tourism. Among the findings of the firm's 2001 survey on pets and travel: 22 percent of dog owners said they "avoid travel with overnight stays" if hotels and resorts don't allow pets.

"This appears," the survey concluded, "to represent a substantial market opportunity for hotels and resorts that provide 'suitable' accommodations."

The luxury pet-boarding center at Disney won't open until mid-2009. It will also offer day care and grooming services. It will be open not only to the pets of tourists but to the pets of Disney employees and local residents as well.

Neither Disney nor Best Friends officials would discuss terms of their contract.

CHICAGO - Coco's Christmas was doggone good last year.

The 5-year-old Shih Tzu got a stocking full of treats and found a pink wool sweater, pink mohair sweater, black fur-trimmed parka and hiking boots waiting under the tree last December. This year, her owner is eyeing a $120 set of pearls with a sterling silver bone clasp along with plenty of edible goodies for the pooch who has almost everything.

"It's an expression of love," said Shannon Fay, a 38-year-old Chicagoan. "She's part of the family."

Pets rule at the holidays, especially dogs, and that helps keep many retailers' registers ringing.

U.S. retail sales may be weak, energy prices way up and housing prices way down, but experts say pets largely defy such economic indicators. Caring owners are no more likely to stiff their beloved animals for the holidays than Santa is to leave rocks in every stocking.

Overall, Americans are expected to spend an estimated $48.7 billion on their pets in 2007, nearly twice the amount of a decade ago and growing at more than 7 percent a year, according to Packaged Facts, a consumer research company in Rockville, Md. Already, spending exceeds the gross domestic product of about 120 nations.

In other words, whatever Fido wants, Fido gets — and then some, particularly in upscale areas.

"It's kind of recession-resistant where we're at," said Steve Coghlan, co-owner of Spoiled Rotten Pets in Chicago's posh Lincoln Park neighborhood. "People are going to spend on their pets no matter what. They're not going to cheat their dogs."

That's especially true when it comes to the holidays. Fifty-six percent of dog owners and 42 percent of cat owners bought holiday gifts for their pets last year, according to a survey by the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association.

Doug Poindexter, president of the World Wide Pet Industry Association, another trade group, says the gift-giving trend reflects the growing humanization of pets in this country.

"If you're going to do it for your child, you're probably going to do it for your pet as well," he said.

Buying Christmas or Hanukkah gifts for the kids — the furry kind — isn't what it used to be. Walk the aisles of a well-stocked pet store at the holidays or cruise Web sites and there is abundant evidence of how enterprising American businesses are trying to part pet lovers from their cash.

High-end, luxury items are increasingly popular. A prospective pet pamperer can find everything from organic cookies and doggie basketball jerseys and jackets to $70 treat jars, $399 temperature-controlled pet carriers and $499 cashmere pet beds.

At Barker & Meowsky, a particularly creative Chicago pet store, the range of products could cheer up any sour puss: Catnip cigars, dog antlers, elf outfits, faux fur cat sleeping bags, plush-toy musical menorahs, Christmas scarves and even some real bling: a $250 crystal-encrusted dog collar made from python skins with a matching $190 leash.

Pet owners love to indulge in fun products for their four-legged family members, according to owner Alice Lerman.

"A sense of humor is so important," she said. "And it's got to be wrapped, it's got to be sealed, it's got to be just like you were giving it to a person. That's a really common request that we get."

Some humans, perhaps sniffing a possible promotion, even get Secret Santa gifts for the boss' dog.

Elsewhere, there are all manner of gifts — themed gifts such as rawhide canes and cat stockings; healthy gifts such as dog energy nutrition bars; gifts for the socially conscious such as organic cotton leashes with proceeds supporting African refugee camps; eco-friendly gifts such as biodegradable poop-pickup bags; and gifts for weak-armed dog owners such as tennis-ball slingshots.

Doctors Foster and Smith, a well-known pet supplier, features 16 pages of gift products in its fall catalog. Even Dr. Marty Smith, co-founder of the Rhinelander, Wis.-based business, marvels at how gift-giving has taken off — and how some people "go through our catalog and seem to get one of everything."

"For a dog that hasn't had a rawhide bone in a while and gets one, this is a good Christmas," he said. "One or two gifts is more than enough for every pet."

Derrick Carter knows that, but he can't help overdoing it for his four dogs at the holidays.

"They give me a really, really incredible amount of love and companionship," the 38-year-old music producer said. "So, they give me something, I give them something."

I went to my Grannies house. After a fun car ride, I got to see my Grannie, and my nephews Kaleal and Donovan. I also got to see my Auntie Krystal and my friend Cody Cat

I had such fun. Playing with everyone, and checking out all the new sights and smells where Grannie lives. I had so much fun that I slept the whole way home, and am still a little tired, but am a happy puppy.

Hi 'Reeses' Fans,

I hope you had a Tail Wagging Holiday weekend. I certainly did!!!

Saturday Mommy went to a flea market to see how her cards would sell to different demographics (that's a 5 cookie word!!!). Daddy and I took her coffee and watched the table while Mommy took a walk around. I helped Daddy eat his fresh croissant. I like croissants from Oferdahls!

On Sunday, I helped Mommy and Daddy create a small Japanese Garden on the front entranceway to the house. Daddy bought a fountain with a spinning ball on the top, and water cascading down the sides on Saturday. Mommy and Daddy went to Lowes on Sunday and bought some log edging, mulch and little succulents for the garden. Mommy had bought a bonsai tree at the flea market, so with some rocks and accent lighting, it is looking great right now.

Mommy is going to get some Japanese figures/benches and a wooden bridge to finish the look later.

It looks really nice at the front. Check out these videos of day and night. A little blotchy, but that makes them faster to see!!!

A cool idea for hot dogs

The Komfort Pets Carrier, billed as the first to offer heating and cooling, is being hyped by its creators as a product as revolutionary as the fax machine or cell phone. If you're a Labrador or a Siamese, maybe it is.

The climate-controlled carrier uses patent-pending conduction/convection technology that turns on cooling when the temperature reaches 72 degrees and warms up when it's below 65. The product has had extensive testing and inspection by veterinarians, according to Bob Inello, chief executive of Komfort Pets, who says the carrier "can provide sanctuary in unheated garages" and is equally useful for homes, cars, boats and RVs.  The smallest carrier (19-by-13), designed for lap dogs or cats, is available in ruby or silver for $399 through komfortpets .com. Medium and large models will be out later this year, as will a metallic-pink version worthy of a Paris Hilton spread in People magazine.  Carol Boker, editor in chief of Pet Product News, says the carriers should be a hit with people who take their dogs or cats along on trips. "The trend of pampering pets shows no sign of slowing down," she notes.

Excerpts from a Cat's Diary:

- Day 983 of my captivity.

My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects.

They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while the other inmates and I are fed mush or some sort of dry nuggets. Although I make my contempt perfectly clear, I nevertheless must eat something in order to keep up my strength. The only thing that keeps me going is my dream of escape. In an attempt to disgust them, I once again vomit on the carpet.

Today I decapitated a mouse and dropped its headless body at their feet. I had hoped this would strike fear into their hearts, since it clearly demonstrates what I am capable of. However, they merely made condescending comments about what a "good little hunter" I am.

There was some sort of gathering of their accomplices tonight. I was placed in solitary confinement for the duration of the event. However, I could hear the noises and smell the food. I overheard that my confinement was due to the power of "allergies." I must learn what this means, and how to use it to my advantage.

Today I was almost successful in an attempt to assassinate one of my tormentors by weaving around her feet as she was walking. I must try this again tomorrow -- but at the top of the stairs.

I am convinced that the other prisoners here are flunkies and snitches. The dog receives special privileges. He is regularly released - and seems to be more than willing to return. He is obviously retarded. The bird has got to be an informant. I observe her communicate with the guards regularly. I am certain that he reports my every move. My captors have arranged protective custody for him in an elevated cell, so he is safe. For now.......

People may argue over “What is art?” but no one can deny that this sweet-faced, four-legged prodigy is a smash hit with her creations. The Art Newspaper named her “the most successful living animal painter in the world.”

Tillamook Cheddar, named for her favorite type of cheese, is an adorable little Jack Russell Terrier who became a self-taught artist at the tender age of six months. Her owner, and now assistant, Bowman Hastie, was writing on a legal pad one day, when Tillie jumped up and started scratching on the paper. Surprised and curious, Hastie helped her along by placing a piece of carbon paper under the top sheet. Tillamook Cheddar scratched at it again, thus creating her first drawing.

Now, before you think that this is some kind of doggie trick, like fetch, consider this. Tillie takes her work very seriously. She loves to draw. When Hastie asks her “Do you want to work?” Tillie goes wild with anticipation waiting for him to get the drawing materials ready. Without opposable thumbs, Tillie still needs Hastie to place her pigment-coated vellum on lithograph paper backed by a matte board and tapes the edges securely. Once the materials are prepared, Tillie snatches it out of his hands and runs off to attack her work.

Tillie’s creations are made by licking, chewing and scratching. Scratching is often punctuated by a bite. The work session is passionate and uninhibited.

“She works with shocking intensity,” her owner/assistant marvels, “sometimes to the point of destroying her creations.”

Some may question whether what Tillie does is art. Bowman Hastie can answer that without hesitation. “Of course it is art,” he says. “It’s hanging on walls in galleries. It’s hanging in people’s homes. It’s purchased as art. People enjoy it.”

Tillamook Cheddar paintings sell for anything from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars, and they are going up in value. She has sold over 100 pieces in her eight-year career.

Most artists Tillie meets are very supportive of her work. She has even collaborated with a few human artists, such as Tom Sachs from New York. And Wim Delvoye helped find her a gallery in Belgium. Hastie says Tillie enjoys her art shows and seems to understand the exhibitions are about her. She appreciates the attention, though she prefers staying close to the cheese table to meeting her public.

“She’s a bit snooty sometimes,” Hastie says of his famous dog. “She’s somewhat aloof around people she doesn’t know. She has a circle of friends she cares about. Other than that, she’s pretty much a regular dog. Goes to the park, chases squirrels, chews on sticks.”

Tillie is sometimes recognized when out in public, but doesn’t sign autographs.

Tillie had six puppies in July 2005, but none of them have shown any artistic interest. One of her sons, Doc Chinook Strongheart Cheddar, lives with her and is quite sweet, but hasn’t found a job yet. Hastie jokes, “We may get him into public relations or something.”

Tillamook Cheddar’s story has appeared in numerous publications, including National Geographic.com, New York Post, Parade and of course, Ripley’s Believe it or Not! She has also appeared on Conan O’Brien. Tillamook Cheddar has shown her work in 17 solo exhibits, and has been featured in 14 group exhibits shared with human artists. She also has her own online gallery, Tillamook Cheddar.com and a book, Portrait of a Dog as a Young Artist. Signed copies are available.

Hi 'Reese's Fans!

Seems like forever since I last put paw to keyboard to write a message to you all!

I have been a busy puppy, watching over 'Reeses Realm ( and looking after my big brother Harry, Deidre and Haley) while they stayed with me while Mommy and Daddy went to London and Paris. Such a busy time for me.

Now I am looking after my Granny, sister Krystal and nephews Kaleal and Donovan. I do have a few minutes to post this for you. Seems a great way for people who cannot have a puppy at home all the time to have some happy puppy moments. What do you think?

Company offers part-time pooches
A California company has sunk its teeth into the canine time-share concept, and plans are in the works for expansion to New York and London.

From the state that popularized purse puppies, drive-through dog washes and gourmet dog food delivery comes the latest in canine convenience -- a company that contracts out dogs by the day to urbanites without the time or space to care for a pet full time.

Marlena Cervantes, founder of FlexPetz, bristles when people refer to her 5-month-old business as a rent-a-pet service. She prefers the term ''shared pet ownership,'' explaining the concept is more akin to a vacation time share or a gym membership than a trip to the video store.

''Our members are responsible in that they realize full-time ownership is not an option for them and would be unfair to the dog,'' said Cervantes, 32, a behavioral therapist who got the idea while working with pets and autistic children. ``It prevents dogs from being adopted and then returned to the shelter by people who realize it wasn't a good fit.''

FlexPetz is currently available in Los Angeles and San Diego, where Cervantes lives. She plans to open new locations in San Francisco next month, New York in September and London by the end of the year.

HOUSING OPTIONS

She's also hoping to franchise the FlexPetz concept so the dogs will have housing options other than kennels when not in use. For San Francisco, she's hired a caretaker who plans to keep the dogs at her house when they aren't on loan to members.

For an annual fee of $99.95, a monthly payment of $49.95 and a per-visit charge of $39.95 a day, (discounted to $24.95 Sunday through Thursday), animal lovers who enroll in FlexPetz get to spend time with a four-legged companion from Cervantes' 10-dog crew of Afghan hounds, Labrador retrievers and Boston terriers.

The membership costs cover the expense of training the dogs, boarding them at a cage-free kennel, home or office delivery, collar-size global positioning devices, veterinary bills and liability insurance. It also pays for the ''care kits'' -- comprised of leashes, bowls, beds and premeasured food -- that accompany each dog on its visits.

Charter member Shari Gonzalez said she was thinking about getting a dog when a dog trainer she consulted suggested part-time ownership. At first, she had reservations.

Gonzalez, 22, never doubted there was room for a dog in her heart. The issue was her life, which included a small, two-bedroom apartment and a full-time schedule of college classes in San Diego.

'I was thinking, `How is a dog going to bounce from house to house and be OK with that,' '' she said. ``I didn't want a dog that would come into my place and pee.''

Her misgivings were allayed after she spoke with Cervantes, who explained that only dogs with social temperaments were picked for the program and that each would ideally be shared by no more than two or three owner-members.

Since signing up, Gonzalez said a black Lab named Jackpot has become a treasured part of her social network. They spend an average of one day each weekend together. He sleeps at her apartment and she takes him on hikes, to the beach and to parks frequented by other dog owners. The money spent on her membership has been well worth it, she said.

''I never even thought that was a possibility,'' Gonzalez said. ``I thought you either owned a dog or you didn't.''

Although she has never seen the doggy day care center where Jackpot spends his off-days, Gonzalez recently met another of his part-time companions, graphic designer Jenny Goddard, 33. Goddard, who is married with a 6-year-old son, said having a dog a weekend or two a month has been perfect for her busy family and encourages them to spend more time together outdoors.

''It's funny,'' she said. ``He is so friendly and immediately playful with us, people are surprised he is a rental dog.''

The idea of commitment-free pets is not entirely new, although no one in the United States has tried it with as much drive as Cervantes. Most private animal shelters, for instance, encourage volunteers to become temporary foster families to animals awaiting adoption.

RESORT TOWN

For 15 years, the Aspen Animal Shelter in Colorado has gone a step further with a Rent-a-Pet program that allows residents and tourists in the resort town to take dogs out for a few hours or overnight for free.

''It benefits the homeless animals, keeps them socialized and exercised and in the end they end up getting adopted,'' said owner Seth Sachson. ``The people benefit, too. When a tourist walks around town with a dog, they feel like a local.''

Melissa Bain, a veterinarian with the Companion Animal Behavior Program at the University of California at Davis, said she had concerns but no hard-and-fast objections to a service like FlexPetz.

On the positive side, it might give people an easy way to test the ownership waters and keep a few dogs from being euthanized, Bain said.

Possible downsides would be irresponsible members who treat the dogs like a lifestyle accessory instead of a living thing.

''It depends on the people and it depends on the animal. Some dogs may be fine and some may become stressed because they are moving from home to home,'' Bain said.

``Perhaps they had a good experience with a good part-time owner and then they get shipped back. What kind of message does that send to kids? That dogs are disposable.''

Cervantes said the hour-long sessions FlexPetz members are required to spend with their dog and a trainer before their first outing ensures the dogs go into caring, competent homes.

Her members, who range in age from 5 to 60-plus, include single women in search of security and a conversation starter, Navy personnel who love dogs but are at sea for much of the year, and seniors who live where dogs are not allowed.

''Usually, our dogs are lavished with attention, and it's undivided attention from our members because it is the only time they have together,'' she said. 'Some people take a dog home and realize, `Hey, I can adopt a dog.' ''

At the Dog Park

Hi 'Reese's Fans!!

I hope you are having a fun weekend like I am.

Today I went to the Dog Park with Mommy and Daddy. It was such fun. I got to wear my new blue harness, and get some exercise on the bars. I like doing chin ups. Builds strong muscles in my arms. Mommy was there to catch me in case I slipped as the bars are so high off the ground.

I also saw my friend Daisy there, playing in the water on the beach. She was having such a good time with other puppy friends, but I did not go in as the water is still a little chilly for me, and looked soooo wet!!!

Do you like car rides? I do. Such fun, even sometimes going to Granny's House!

Here are some tips for taking puppies on a car ride:

Some dogs happily jump into the car the minute the door or hatchback opens, while others -- perhaps with visions of vet visits dancing in their furry heads -- immediately tug at their leashes when you get within 10 yards of your car. If your puppy dreads car trips, help him be a more relaxed traveler.

• Well before a long ride, take him for a few short trips to fun places like the beach or the local dog park. He'll begin to connect car rides with fun, not trips to the kennel or vet.
• Spray a flannel cloth with lavender oil and put it in the car. The scent is as calming for dogs as it is for people. In one study, when dogs were surrounded by the scent, they barked less and moved around less during car rides.
• Secure the dog to the backseat (never the front, if you have airbags) using a harness, or confine him to a crate. Either will keep him from becoming a missile if you must stop suddenly and will prevent injury if airbags deploy in an accident.
• Talk to him during the car ride, take walking and stretching breaks often, and offer him water and treats or light snacks.

I love treats for being good!!!

Visit to Grannies House

Hi 'Reese's Fans!!

I hope you all had a great weekend! I certainly did. My Mommy took me and my brothers to visit my Granny and good friend Cody Cat.

It was soo good to see Granny again, and Kaleal, Haley and Donovan. I also got to see my big sister Krystal. Lots of people came to see me, Uncle Bernie and Sharon, Auntie Van, Aunty Dee and neighbors galore.

I had so much fun, running around with Haley, Kaleal and Donovan, hanging out with Grandma and running and playing chase with Cody.

My cousin Erington graduated from High School, and is off to college this Summer. Lots of new and exciting things to see and sniff for Erington.

I had so much fun that I slept most of the way home.

It was so nice to get home, have a long drink of water and say Hi to Daddy. I even got to nap on Mommy and Daddy's bed with them for a while too.

I have been catching up with my naps today, inbetween my patrols. Long walk with Daddy tonite, lots of stories to tell my friends.

My nephew Kaleal now can read my blog every day. Don't forget to e-mail me soon Kaleal!!!

Saturday was Puppy Love Birthday Club Member MollyBears birthday. Happy Birthday MollyBear. I hope you like the surprise I sent you from Puppy Love!

Hi 'Reeses Fans!!

Today is Mommies Day. I hope you all did something nice for your Mommy!!

I got my Mommy a card and box of her favorite chocolate candies, and I also took Mommy to breakfast at the Marina. Daddy drove us as I am still too short to reach the pedals, and used his card as the Marina do not take the Cookie Card yet, and that is the only credit card I have right now.....

We had a wonderful time sitting by the water, and Mommy looked so cute next to me!!

When we got home, Daddy made Mommy Bucks Fizz with some of the "widow" and that made Mommy extra happy.

We also "Skyped" with my cousin Emma in England, and her Daddy.

I am such the good looking puppy this week!!

Yesterday I went to my favorite Spa, Pet Splash in Lighthouse Point. My personal spa consultant "Lou" always gives me that special treatment that superstars need! :-)

I have added a picture of me and Lou for you to see!!

I had my special "Tyreese" cut, bath, groomings, nail treatments, you know the Whole Works! I enjoyed my time there, except the bath of course!, and am now ready for some more modelling for Puppy Love at Color of Love Studios.

Hi 'Reeses fans!

Today was a lucky day for a lost puppy. Pascal and Indi (my "Road Dog") found a lost puppy on the street. Pascal tried calling the numbers on his tags, but got no reply. (Indi's paws are too big to press the numbers on the phone!)

So Pascal called the police, and that is when Daddy and I saw them outside. Daddy & I put the tag numbers into the county database to see where the puppy's home is as the police came over. We found the address and gave it to the police officer, who took the lost puppy home. Everyone was so happy, and Pascal is Hero of the Day!

I then went on my walk, and stopped by Daisy's house, but Daisy was not allowed out as she had been bad, opening the front door and running down the street and onto a busy street. That is something a puppy MUST not do as a car or truck may not see the puppy and hit her.

Such a busy day! This weeks video is of me and Daddy playing tug and fetch the rope toy! I LOVE that game!!

Wow what a busy weekend! My Granny and Aunty Van can to visit for the weekend! Such fun. I made sure they had lots of "me" time, and when they left, I was tired but happy.

Mommy gave me a bath, and I got a relaxing brushings from Daddy.

Retirees mount fundraising drive

Two South Florida veterans, who remember the danger and death they faced in combat more than a half century ago, believe they can make a difference in the lives of men and women coming home wounded today.

They are doing it one dog at a time.

Retirees Jerry Kramer and Irwin Stovroff were alarmed when they heard veterans blinded and maimed in the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts might have to wait months for guide and service animals that help the disabled and blind with daily tasks. The pair have mounted an extensive fundraising drive to speed the process.

The two men, neighbors in the Boca West community near Boca Raton, in two months have raised more than $200,000 for the VetDogs program at Guide Dog Foundation for the Blind. Most of the money has come from their friends and neighbors. The nonprofit organization, based on Long Island, N.Y., trains guide and service dogs, then gives them to disabled veterans nationwide at no charge.

Jeff Bressler, chief marketing officer for VetDogs, was amazed that a grassroots campaign could generate so much in so little time.

"I've been in fundraising and development work for 20 years, and I've never seen anything take off like this," Bressler said.

Recent publicity about poor treatment of the combat wounded at Walter Reed Army Medical Center gave the Boca West VetDogs campaign a boost, Kramer said. One man interested in donating upped his contribution to $6,000 as the story broke, enough to fund the training and placement for one dog.

"Regardless of how people feel about the war, they want to support the vets," said Kramer, who was wounded and contracted malaria as a combat infantry sergeant during the Korean War. "I know what it was like to be injured, but I don't what it's like to have to go back home unassisted."

A former developer, Kramer likes to tally the effort dog by dog. Contributions gathered so far mean 33 dogs for 33 vets, and he's hoping for more. A small item originally placed in the Boca West newsletter, accompanied by a photo of Stovroff with his pet corgi, has turned it into a massive direct mail campaign mounted and financed by Kramer.

He's next soliciting South Florida businesses and professionals, as well as contacts he made through an ophthalmologist he knows in Maryland. Donors contribute directly to the foundation. Kramer's only stipulation is that Boca West dogs go to vets of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.

Stovroff, like Kramer, saw some of the worst casualties of war: A bombardier on a B-24, he was shot down on his last mission over Germany and captured, then put in a prisoner of war camp. At 85, he volunteers at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Riviera Beach, helping POWs with their VA benefit claims.

That's where he heard that veterans recently injured in combat might have to wait months for service dogs, animals trained to fetch and perform such tasks as flipping light switches for people who have lost limbs.

Demand for guide dogs has grown as rehabilitation therapists realize older veterans with age-related sight impairment can benefit from these animals. Sixteen Florida veterans were matched with dogs in 2006, more than in a typical year, said John Getz, the Riviera center's chief of blind rehabilitation service. Requests for dogs usually are filled as they are received, Getz said, although there can be variations. So veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan wait in the same line as those from World War II and Korea, who make up the majority of patients at his center.

The VA is debating whether service dogs are effective and if they should be provided at the government's cost to vets, federal officials said. Blind vets must have their guide dogs donated by organizations like VetDogs because the VA does not cover the cost of obtaining and training these animals. It does cover veterinarian expenses and harnesses.

Valor, the first dog financed through a Boca West "scholarship," is a service dog. He arrived last month at his new home in Texas, where he will act as substitute arms and a companion for an ex-Marine, a double amputee wounded in the Middle East.

The black Labrador, only 10 months old, already is a celebrity: He once appeared on Martha Stewart's television show with his volunteer puppy walker, actress Isabella Rosellini.

Some of those Kramer and Stovroff have talked to about VetDogs say the VA should pay for dogs for blinded and wounded veterans. Others have expressed disapproval of the Iraq war.

But regardless of these feelings, the two men say they've encountered nothing but support and sympathy for America's newest veterans, the same support that greeted Stovroff and Kramer when they returned home from war so many years ago.

"Maybe they're thinking, `It could be happening to my kid, or my grandson,'" Stovroff said.

First we took Mommy's car for an oil change and walked back. It was hot in the sun, and I had to take a "puffy puppy" break to cool down and rest my paddy paws.

Wow, what a fun and busy weekend. I was a puppy in demand!!!!!!!

Saturday I went on a whole bunch of car rides. Getting Coffee for Mommy, going to PetSupermarket with Daddy looking for a new leash (I got a new nylabone too!), a visit to my favorite boutique, Gigi and Luca, to see if the new shirts were in yet (sadly not yet) and out for a ride with Mommy and Daddy too!

I also got to play a lot with Daddy.

On Sunday it was Dog Day in the park. I got to go with Mommy and Daddy and have a fun time in the park.

I got a new photo ID card, in case I get lost, from the nice police officers, got to see and be seen by LOTS of people, try out free treats at the vintage fire truck exhibit (they were extra yummy!!!) and run in the dog play area!! I saw my friends Indie, Chadwick and Winston and LOTS AND LOTS of other puppies all having sooo much fun.

Mommy took lots of pictures, and I have posted a few of them for you to see!! I hope you like them as much as I do.

I was very sleepy last night, but a very happy puppy!!

By putting dog food on menus, Florida restaurants have increased profits.

Grilled tuna and key lime pie aren't the only specialties at Sam Snead's Restaurant. The Orlando eatery also offers a chicken-and-kibble entree -- served on a Frisbee for its canine guests.
Sam Snead's restaurant, like many others, is taking advantage of a change in state law allowing dogs at outdoor dining areas. Sales are up 5 percent since the patio was opened to dogs, said owner Candie Ryser, who helped push for the new law. Customers eat and drink more if they don't have to rush home to their pets, she said. Additional revenue comes from the canine menu, including $9.25 tenderloin tips and a $4.25 ``bow-wow pizza.''
''Sasha really enjoyed the experience,'' said Jason Callison, 34, a software development manager who dined at Sam Snead's with Sasha, his cocker spaniel. ``The waitress brought a bowl of water with our drink orders.''
Dogs aren't welcome at most restaurants across the country, and Food and Drug Administration recommendations generally bar dogs other than those that assist blind or disabled people. But now, under a three-year pilot program that took effect in July, Florida cities can opt out of the FDA guidelines and permit dogs on decks and patios.
A proliferation of couples without children, divorcees and singles has made dining with dogs increasingly important, pet owners say.
''Dogs are the children of the new millennium,'' said Tina Valant-Siebelts, a Boca Raton photographer who sometimes dines with Mack, her Australian shepherd. ``The greatest benefit is you'll never have to dine alone.''
At Boca Raton's Cucina D'Angelo restaurant, more than 100 people and 60 dogs attended a ''yappy hour'' in January. In addition to an Italian buffet and dog treats, massages were available -- for the dogs.
The Three Dog Bakery in Boca Raton is planning a Dogs Night Out at a Starbucks that has outdoor seating, said owner Robyn Edelson. The bakery will get to market its dog treats, and profits will be donated to an animal shelter.
Tourism, Florida's biggest industry, may benefit as well. The state's lodging and restaurant association helped push for the law. An estimated 14 percent of Americans travel with pets, according to a survey by the Travel Industry Association, a Washington-based trade group.
While Florida's climate is conducive to dining alfresco much of the year, cities elsewhere are joining the dog-dining movement. In January, the Dallas City Council approved an ordinance allowing dogs on restaurant patios.
Not all Florida cities are opening their eateries to dogs.
Pembroke Pines' commissioners worried that letting dogs in could be a first step toward admitting other animals to restaurants, Mayor Frank Ortis said. Juno Beach won't permit dogs at restaurants because it could lead to allowing them on the town's beaches, where they are strictly prohibited.
Even some supporters acknowledge that doggie diners can get unruly. Valant-Siebelts said she has observed dogs on chairs -- forbidden under the law -- and licking plates used for human guests. Still, it's no worse than an ill-behaved child throwing french fries, she said.
The Florida law will expire in 2009 unless the Legislature renews it, which pet owners like Henry Corona will want.
Corona dresses up his Yorkshire terriers for nights out in South Beach. ''My Yorkies are like little socialites,'' said Corona, a graphic artist. ``They enjoy the outing as much as I do.''

Keepers Days

Hi 'Reeses Fans,

I hope you are having as much fun today as I am!

Today Daddy & I went to the Keepers Day celebration at the Park.

It was such fun! A car ride to get there, and then lots and lots of people, puppies and new things to see. sniff and do!

There was even a pet Show, but I did not like all that running around in the sun, so I had Daddy take me home before the pet Show as I was getting to be a hot puupy!

All the rides for children were free, and I got some free coloring books, transfer and cool stuff for Kaleal, Haley and Donovan in Sanford. They'll love all these goodies when they get them from me!

There was even a classic car show. I liked the shade by the cars more than the cars.....

Hi 'Reeses Fans!

I hope you all had a great Christmas, and will have a Happy & Prosperous New Year.

I had a GREAT Christmas. Santa Paws was very good to me, and I got lots of fun new toys and treats I even got another electronic mouse toy. I love playing with these, and as always the "squeaky" part came out in my mouth. It wasn't my fault, it just seems to happen every time I get one of these great fun mouse toys!

I also got an iPet squeaky toy that I love to play with. I have had so much fun this week, Mommy and Daddy were both home the whole time to play with me!!!

Yesterday we all went to my favorite boutique, Gigi & Luca's to try on and buy a new outfit for me, and to taste any special treats they had out for puppies to "try before they buy". I got a great new red outfit, and will post a picture of me in it real soon!

There were some new born (well 8 week old) Yorkie puppies visiting looking for new homes. Mommy and Daddy thought they were real cute, but I was not as impressed as they were. I said "Hi" and then continued on looking at all the new fun items in the store, and decided on the red outfit with the words "I Have Issues" on the back. :-)

Today I modeled for Mommy. I love having my photo taken, I get yummy treats as a reward for making Mommy look good!!

Tonight I am staying in with Mommy and Daddy as it is New Years Eve and I do not like all the noisy fireworks all around us.

I hope you all had a Happy New Year and will be reading my little blog next year.

Christmas is almost here again!

Hi 'Reeses Fans!

Christmas is almost here again and I am getting excited already!

The other weekend, Kaleal, Haley, Donovan, Krystal, Cedric, Harry, Deidre, my Grannie and Dannielle came over for our tree trimming party!

I was so busy helping, I even missed my bath! :-)

The Christmas Tree looks great, and I already have my stocking up on my bedroom wall, ready for Santa Paws to come and leave me presents, I hope!!!

I have my own little Christmas tree, with lights on it, set up too.

After everyone went home I slept a lot for a couple of days as I was soooo tired from running around and helping everyone decorate the tree.

Last weekend, Daddy and I put up the outside lights. Pascal, my frind Indies' Daddy, calls the lights "runway lights". They look so nice around the driveway, and this year we have even more of them!

I am being "extra" good right now, as I know Santa Paws is watching and making his list. I want to be on his "good puppies" list!

I am going to write some Puppy Love Christmas Cards for my puppy friends today, and send Santa Paws my wish list!

The International Language of Dogs
Dogsare creatures of few “words” yet they are able to communicate easily with dogs everywhere, and with most humans. If you and your dog were to travel to a foreign country, knowing nothing of its language and culture, you would have a hard time communicating. You would have to abandon your vast verbal vocabulary and resort to making basic gestures – hoping that none of them are culturally offensive.

Your dog, however, upon meeting a foreign dog, would be able to know through body language what each other’s social status is, through sniffs their age and sex, what they ate, their general health, where they’ve been, and availability to mate. Then, should it be necessary, through barks or growls, they can also determine how friendly or aggressive the other is and how they should proceed with the relationship.

A dog’s primary communication is first through scent, then body language, and then vocal sounds. In the wild, barks call the pack together, alert each other to danger or to a delightful food find. Dogs living with humans quickly figure out that communicating to us through scent is useless – we’ll never appreciate the detailed messages embedded in urine on a fencepost. So our dogs speak to us through body language, because we understand it fairly well, and through barking, because it definitely gets our attention.

According to Stanley Coren, author of many books on dog communication, including How Dogs Think and How to Speak Dog, all dogs share a universal barking language, though different breeds seem to have different dialects. The vocal sounds, though limited in the “words” which are barks, growls, whines, yips, yelps, whimpers and howls, are quite varied in the pitch, repetition and duration and these “inflections” form meaning. Generally, lower-pitched sounds are warnings and higher-pitched sounds are friendly. Regardless of your dog’s size, she knows if she lowers her voice, she may be perceived as being larger. Conversely, even large breeds may whine to say they are no threat.

The duration of a dog’s bark, whine or growl can significantly change the meaning of what your dog is saying. Shorter sounds indicate more intensity, fear or surprise, while longer sounds are less urgent and more thought-out. For example, a quick yelp can indicate pain or unpleasant surprise, while the longer version of the same sound, a whimper can be a plea for the food you’re eating.

Repetition also adds meaning, says Coren. Many barks in a row indicate agitation or excitement, while a few barks indicate an interest in something, but it’s no big deal.

A growl is a clear warning. The deeper the growl, the more serious the warning, and the more confident the dog is to back it up with aggression. A dog that stops growling, but maintains his stance, is through with negotiations and is ready to act.

Howling is not common with domesticated dogs, unless they are isolated. The classic barks that lead to a howl is a dog calling to her pack, and the howl indicates fear that the pack won’t respond. On a happier note, howling can also be a dog’s way of singing, and some will produce a howl upon hearing high-pitched sounds.

Pay attention to your dog’s barking. She’s rarely just making noise. Usually, she has something to say.

Fun with Pixie

Hi 'Reeses Fans!

I have just got in from my walk with Daddy. We went out to see what is new, and see who else was out playing tonite.

I saw my friend Pixie with her Mommy, and Pixie and I got to play and have lots of sniffs together.

Pixie and I got to run and sniff, and Daddy and Pixies Mommy got to run with us!

I also got to play with some new friends, and my good friends Winston and Chadwick.

Such a fun time, and then when we got home. Daddy swam in the pool, and I got to run up and down the side with him, barking encouragment for Daddy to swim faster.

Time to play with brown dog now. so I'll write more tomorrow...

New Puppy Cut

Hi 'Reeses Fans!

How was your weekend? I had a busy weekend, starting with a Spa day at Pet Splash on Saturday. My personal Spa Lady, Lou, made sure I had all the special puppy treatments, and when I was done I looked so good, every one wanted to stroke me and say hello.

When I got home, I ran around for a minute, then had a well deserved nap. Daddy and I had our walk later that evening, and everyone who saw me thought I looked extra cute!

Today I helped Daddy get coffee for Mommy this morning, and have been making sure Mommy and Daddy are OK all day.

We now have a new fountain in the sitting area out back in 'Reeses Realm. It is a lion head fountain, and it is very relaxing to sit out by it. At night it is lit up, and looks more like a lighted waterfall. It is very relaxing to be around. Check out my pix and see for yourself.

Hi 'Reeses fans!!

I'm sure you've all been wondering where I have been for the last week or so....

Well, last week Kaleal, Haley, Donovan and my Grannie can to visit for the week.

Wow!! Such a fun time, and soooo tiring!

I hardly had time for a nap while everyone was here, and then I helped Mommy take everyone home again on the weekend.

I was so tired, I slept a lot on the drive back with everyone, and again on the drive home with Mommy.

I think I slept all day Monday and Tuesday (between patrols and checking in on Command Central) catching up! I didn't even go on very long walks with Daddy as I was soo tired.

I am feeling a lot more energetic now, and will be able to keep my blog up to date.

Pets can help children improve their reading skills.

The R.E.A.D. (Reading Education Assistance Dogs) program pairs specially trained therapy dogs with children who are struggling with reading skills. The dog serves as an audience as the child reads aloud. Dog owners volunteer to take their trained dogs to schools and libraries throughout the U.S. and Canada. Contact your local R.E.A.D. organization to participate, or try this read-aloud approach at home.

Wow!! Such wonderful puppies sitting there helping children to read. I try and do that but I get so excited, my mind wanders and I am off to play with a toy somewhere, or check out a sound I heard.

I am working on sitting and listening better though... A cookie or treat at the end of the book certainly makes it easier to sit still and listen right up to the end!

On a typical Saturday afternoon, Ozzy rolls out of bed, gets his hair done and heads out to CityPlace for some shopping and socializing. He might mingle over gourmet baked goods and check out the latest fashions.

Finally, he stops at Starbucks -- to sit at the feet of his owner while she sips coffee.

Ozzy is a shih tzu, and he's one of many South Florida dogs who don't spend their days cooped up inside. Instead, they're out and about at some of the hottest spots and social events.

South Florida is a dog-friendly place. And the right pup is as essential an accessory as a Louis Vuitton bag.

A new state law goes into effect July 1 allowing local governments to determine whether dogs are permitted on restaurant patios. Not that it matters too much in South Florida anyway. Dogs have been quietly tolerated everywhere from cafes to malls to coffeehouses.

For many people, dogs are the ticket to meeting new business clients or Mr. or Ms. Right or Right Now. Planned events bring singles together or allow South Floridians to give back to their community -- or both.

We've put together a list of some of the most unique, dog-friendly places and events in South Florida. Time to start thinking outside the bark park.

Habitat Cafe

Owners can enjoy breakfast and lunch at this Palm Beach Gardens cafe, and dogs can feel welcome at the outside courtyard. Owners Lori and Phil Smillie are happy to bring water to thirsty pooches and accommodate any of their fellow dog owners. The Smillies are the proud owners of a Yorkie named Lucy, who doesn't hang out at the restaurant.

During the week, the cafe attracts a business lunch crowd. Stop by with a dog on the weekends, when things are a little livelier at this plaza, with live music during lunch.

The whole area is dog friendly, too, with a doggy boutique next store called Bella Paws. The dog store features everything for the posh pup, and in-store events like pet photography. The cafe and boutique complement each other nicely, creating a mini haven for dogs in north Palm Beach County.

Cort's Coffeehouse

Staffed by Plantation's young and hip (believe it or not, there are some), this coffeehouse is a refreshing alternative in a sea of strip malls and chain restaurants.

Now you and your dog can have your mocha served by a bored-looking art student with spiky hair. Dogs can hang out with their owners at the outside seating, and enjoy the open-mike nights and various events hosted by the coffeehouse.

Saturday morning is "Dog Day at the Cafe," says Wes Cort, the owner's son, who helps run the coffeehouse. A small group of devotees bring their dogs from 9 to 11 a.m. for breakfast.

However, dogs are welcome any time, and a glass jar with free Milk Bone treats sits on the counter.

Sandy Paws Pet Boutique and CityPlace

Visitors to this cute boutique are often greeted by Ozzy, a shih tzu who is the grand dog of employee Robyn Sherman. Ozzy keeps watch over the cutesy and original doggy gear, including an extensive selection of homemade gourmet dog treats that look tastier than some human treats. Posters, books, toys and keepsakes complete the store.

The store also hosts events, and owner Christine Trudel in July will start a monthly "Yappy Hour," with wines and appetizers.

On the weekends, you can pick up a "Mommy's Single" or "I Have Two Daddies" dog shirt, and walk the dog around CityPlace. Palm Beach's pretty people bring everything from tiny teacup dogs to Great Danes to see and be seen. Starbucks is a popular gathering place for dog owners to have coffee and enjoy the parade.

Bar Boutique

Lawyer Jill Ginsberg wanted to open her law office in downtown Hollywood, but was running into trouble getting the permit.

So she opened a boutique and bar in the front of her office, and created a dog-friendly space.

Bar Boutique hosts Woof Wednesdays, a wine and cheese event on the first Wednesday of every month, that benefits Pet Rescue. The last event featured a dog and owner fashion show.

Ginsberg owns three shih tzus that she adopted from shelters. A board in the back of the store features photos of pets that need sponsors, a way to help an animal out without adopting it.

Dogs are always welcome at Bar Boutique, with water and food provided to visiting animals, but pet traffic definitely picks up during Hollywood's ArtWalks, every third Saturday. Downtown Hollywood is full of roving canines, from large to small.

There is certainly no shortage of ladies who attend the events organized by this Web site. They bring along their dogs who are as groomed and pedicured as they are.

The site tries to organize at least one dog-related event a month, according to organizer Cary Roman.

"Depending on the time and place, we get anywhere from 40 to 80 people, of all ages," Roman said.

Events include business networking and happy hours, with plans in the works for a pet-friendly singles brunch. Professionals in their 30s attend most of the sites' events, although there is a mix. Some events are geared toward singles, some are not. Pet groomers and others in the pet business also use the events to network. Proceeds benefit area animal shelters.

"We have a reputation for doing nicer events -- good food and wine, not your typical singles event," said Roman.

Broward Humane Society

This nonprofit organization may not organize very many "bring your dog along" events, but the ones it does organize are blockbusters.

The annual Walk for the Animals fund-raiser, held in late February or early March, attracts pets and owners from all over South Florida.

The annual Bark at the Park lets owners bring their dogs to a Florida Marlins game. The event, held June 15, benefits the Humane Society.

And if you need some time apart from Fido, try out the PetSet, the Humane Society's fund-raising group. They organize social and networking events, and are a prime source of pet-minded professional singles.

Dairy Queen

Treat your dog to the same treat you'd give yourself at Dairy Queen. On Mondays from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., dogs can enjoy a free cup or cone of Dairy Queen's trademark vanilla ice cream.

Everyone from couples to artists to trendsetters bring their dog -- a must-have in Wilton Manors. On most Mondays more than 100 dogs will traipse through this local landmark.

Lincoln Road

This pedestrian mall is a hotspot for locals and tourists, and rightfully so. Shopping, outdoor cafes and street performers bring out gawking tourists as well as Amazonian models.

Dogs are quite possibly the only thing they have in common. Girls in bikinis cruise by on bikes with their tiny fluffy dogs in baskets. Couples stroll by with their bulldogs. Bodybuilders walk dogs the size of small horses. Boston terriers and beagles patiently lie down next to their owners at cafes, or slurp from dog bowls left for them.

Dogs can be found on Lincoln Road almost 24/7, but Sunday afternoon and early evenings bring them out even more. While their owners stroll the farmers' and antique markets, the dogs check each other out. A squabble rarely breaks out, but for the most part, dogs bring people together in a city where people can be very divided.

Let Rover run free at these South Florida dog parks. Most are open from dusk to dawn seven days a week, and allow leash-less play. All are free except where noted, and puppies younger than 4 months old are not allowed. Each dog must have a current rabies vaccination.

Florida dog wins national accolades for dialing 911 to save owner

WASHINGTON _ Belle Weaver is flying into the nation's capital Monday to receive an award for saving a family member's life. Before she leaves town, she'll meet with her congressman, accept a certificate and bow her head to receive a medal.

Stories such as hers, of heroism and quick thinking, are always inspiring. But this one has a twist, and not just because Belle is 3 years old.

You see, Belle Weaver is a beagle. She used her owner's cellphone to call 911.

Her owner, Kevin Weaver, 34, was in the throes of a diabetic seizure, lying unconscious on his kitchen floor in Ocoee, Fla., when Belle located his phone and chomped down on the keypad, triggering a call.

The only thing emergency dispatchers heard was barking, but it was enough cause to send help, they reasoned. Weaver, a former flight attendant, woke up hours later in the hospital, weak and disoriented. Belle was there by his side, having finagled a ride in the ambulance.

Today the pint-size canine is taking a plane to Washington _ and not in the cargo hold, mind you _ to be honored. Belle will be the first animal to receive the VITA Wireless Samaritan Award, presented each year by the CTIA Wireless Foundation. The foundation honors those who use their wireless phones to save lives, stop crime or help in other emergencies. Cingular Wireless submitted Belle's nomination.

``We get that wireless is a new way for rude people to be rude to one another,'' said David Diggs, executive director of the Wireless Foundation, acknowledging cellphones are known too often for shattering the peace in restaurants and on trains. ``But at the same time, the safety benefits that this technology has brought, we think, are immeasurable.''

Doctors told Weaver that had Belle not intervened before his roommates arrived home _ leaving Weaver alone for five hours on the kitchen floor with dangerously low blood sugar _ he probably wouldn't have made it.

``I would have died,'' said Weaver, still a bit incredulous about the whole experience. ``I would have slipped into a coma and died.''

For her part, Belle was hardly the pedigreed hero in waiting. In fact, as a puppy, she was returned to the pet store twice by dissatisfied buyers before Weaver's friend mentioned seeing the doggy in the window.

``I felt sorry for her,'' Weaver said about that encounter less than two years ago. ``I went in and said, 'She's mine.' ''

Belle had no special skills other than friendship. But as Weaver's lifelong struggle with diabetes got worse and he developed seizures, a frequent passenger on one of his flights suggested he give Belle special training as a medical assistance dog.

Gov. Bush signs bill allowing dogs to eat at restaurants

ORLANDO, Fla.--At just 1 year old, Theo had already turned to a life of crime.

The barely-more-than-a-handful Yorkie would sneak into restaurants inside his owner's bag--usually undetected, but he and Marcy Richardson have been kicked out before.

``He loves to be outside with a bunch of people,'' said Richardson, a 26-year-old Orlando opera singer. ``He's quiet and never makes a mess. Everyone loves him.''

Now she and Theo can stop worrying and start chowing down.

Gov. Jeb Bush on Friday signed the so-called ``doggie dining'' bill, allowing local governments to let restaurants permit dogs to eat with their owners outside. Florida health regulations previously prevented all dogs except service animals from joining patrons al fresco--though several restaurants ignored the rules until Orlando-area regulators started cracking down last year.

State Rep. Sheri McInvale, R-Orlando, filed the bill after some complained they were threatened with fines.

The measure creates a three-year pilot program, with the state to determine whether to continue it. Allowing dogs to dine would be up to each county, and even if it's allowed restaurant owners would still decide on their own whether to participate.

Bush said the bill will allow dog lovers and their pets to ``have a brewski together, have a hot dog together or whatever they want outdoors.''

``It just seems like it's a small thing but it's going to be an important thing for a whole lot of people,'' Bush said. It was a bittersweet day for the governor after his black Labrador --and Florida's First Dog, Marvin --died Wednesday at age 11 following a battle with cancer.

``He was a beautiful black lab and he brought great joy to our lives,'' Bush said, adding that he was glad Marvin was out of pain and imagined him in doggie heaven.

But not everyone supported the bill. George Jones, a 51-year-old Orlando accountant with a border collie and black Labrador, said he thought legally allowing dogs to dine in public was ``the most ignorant thing I've ever seen.''

``They eat well, but they don't eat with me,'' Jones said. I've already made the decision that I won't go to any place that will allow them. I just don't think people should eat with dogs; that's disgusting.''

The Florida Restaurant and Lodging Association lauded the bill in a written statement for providing more flexibility to business owners.

``Aside from the obvious benefit of reducing the need for doggie bags, this legislation reiterates the desire of restaurateurs to be the ultimate decision maker in how their businesses are run,'' president and CEO Carol B. Dover said.

Without Marvin by his side, Bush signed the bill holding state Sen. Charlie Clary's dog Dixie Cup, which provided a seconding paw print.

The government went to the dogs Friday.

Gov. Jeb Bush, fresh from legislative battles about class size and school vouchers, came to Orlando to deal with another weighty issue: allowing dogs to dine at restaurants.

Surrounded by yapping hounds and yapping politicians, Bush signed a bill that allows cities to grant permission to restaurant owners who want to open their patio dining rooms to four-legged customers.

"There are millions of Floridians who love their dogs. Their dogs are their best companions, even if they're married," Bush quipped. "These dogs and their companions can have a brewski together, a hotdog together or whatever they want."

The ceremony took place at Sam Snead's Restaurant, where a canine uprising began two years ago.

Like other restaurants downtown, Sam Snead's had built a loyal following of furry customers on its outdoor patio. Dog owners could browse from a "Furry Friends Menu," including chicken and kibble and bow-wow pizza served on a complimentary Frisbee.

But state restaurant inspectors put a stop to it. Late in 2004, inspectors suddenly began enforcing a no-dogs-allowed rule that had long been on the books but had been all but ignored. Allowing dogs at restaurants wouldn't be sanitary, they argued.

Enforcement remained spotty; dogs were still welcome at some cafes in College Park and Winter Park, but those downtown, including Sam Snead's, Dexter's Cafe, Anthony's Pizza and others, were told to kick out the canines or risk $5,000 fines.

That's when the fur started to fly. Sam Snead's owner Candie Ryser began circulating a petition, and tallied up more than 10,000 mostly human signatures. Orlando Commissioner Patty Sheehan, who represents the district, pushed for a change in state law.

"We've never had a situation where people have gotten sick from having a dog at a restaurant. People have dogs in their kitchens at home and no one has gotten sick," said Sheehan, her dog Maxine tucked under her arm.

Sheehan enlisted the help of state Rep. Sheri McInvale, R-Orlando, who sponsored a bill allowing local governments to decide for themselves whether restaurants can permit dogs in outdoor eating areas. The bill was in danger in the Senate until its sponsor named the legislation after well-liked Destin Sen. Charlie Clary's dog, Dixie Cup. Legislators fell in love with the Dixie Cup Clary Local Control Act.

Under the new law, which takes effect immediately, cities may enact ordinances allowing restaurants to apply for permission to open their patio doors to dogs.

Memorial Day Weekend`

Hi 'Reeses Fans!

I hope you had a fun Memorial Day Weekend. I certainly did.

I had so much fun that last night (Memorial Day), I was soooooo tired, that I went to bed early to catch up with some zzzzzzzzzzzzzz's

Saturday I helped Mommy and Daddy do errands, and all weekend I helped Daddy look after my friend Chester Cat. Chesters' Family had gone to the Keys for the weekend, so Daddy & I looked in on him, and made sure he had plenty to eat and drink, and someone to play with, that was me!

Sunday was non-stop fun too, and I had to practice my Swimming so I can get out of the pool in case I fall in. I was such a good boy, and did really well, but all that swimming followed by a bath and brushings left me super tired.

I wanted to play all I could, so it was another day without a proper nap.

Monday, I helped Daddy put out our flag, and spent a lot of time playing with Mommy and Daddy, and helping Daddy with the BBQ that afternoon.

I LOVE helping Daddy when it is time to cook. I am Daddys' "sous-chef"

What did you do for the long weekend? I hope you had a lot of fun too!!!

Big Anniversary Party at my Favorite Boutique

Hi 'Reeses Fans!

Wow!!! What a fun and busy weekend!

Saturday was the one year anniversary of the opening of my favorite boutique, Gigi & Luca. There was a big party, and of course it was an event not to miss. A place to sniff and be sniffed at!!!

Daddy and I went over at 1PM to see what was going on.

I was so excited, my little tail was wagging as fast as it could, and I couldn't wait for Daddy to open the door and follow me into the store.

Every one knew my name, and I had such a fun time saying hello to everyone!

I got a party gift bag, and inside was a fun squeaky toy, some treats, and books on puppy stuff for Mommy and Daddy to read.

The boutique had lots of new tasty treats for us to try, and a buffet table of finger food for all the Mommies and Daddies there!

I wore my Hawaian Shirt, and took my drivers license and cookie card with me in case I wanted to buy something,

I looked so cute that the official photographer just had to take my picture. I had my puppy-cam with me, and Daddy also took some pictures for me with it.

After checking out the new items in the store, I took up my position by the people food table, so I could snak-vac any pieces of food that fell onto the floor.

I love helping keep the floor clean around buffet tables!

Everyone was having so much fun, I even tried on some sunglasses. Not quite "me" though, so I did not buy them.

I had such a fun time, and even got to meet some new friends.

I did not get to meet Susans Mom Pat from Northern Ireland as she was staying so far away in Miami. Maybe Pat will come to visit my boutique next time she visits Susan in MiamI

Hi 'Reeses fans!

Today is Mothers Day so Daddy and I did our best to make today special for Mommy.

Mommy was not well yesterday, so this morning after I gave her my Mothers Day Card, I gave Mommy a big hug and let her cuddle up to me on the bed. It was such fun!

Then Daddy and I went and got coffee and a croisant for Mommy. The croisant was yummy in my tummy when I got a piece of Mommy's and Daddy's.

Later I helped Daddy make a nice lobster and snow crab leg dinner for Mommy. Cedric and Danielle came over to celebrate with us.

It was such a fun day!

Later my friend Indi came to the door, and we played in the front yard for a while before I went on my walk with Daddy.

I hope you had a fun day too!

A Dog Writes to Heaven

Dear Heaven:

Why do humans smell the flowers, but seldom, if ever, smell one another?

Dear Heaven: When we get to heaven, can we sit on your couch? Or is it still the same old story?

Dear Heaven: Why are there cars named after the jaguar, the cougar, the mustang, the colt, the stingray, and the rabbit, but not ONE named for a dog?

How often do you see a cougar riding around? We do love a nice ride! Would it be so hard to rename the "Chrysler Eagle" the "Chrysler Beagle"?

Dear Heaven: If a dog barks his head off in the forest and no human hears him, is he still a bad dog?

Dear Heaven: We dogs can understand human verbal instructions, hand signals, whistles, horns, clickers, beepers, scent ID's, electromagnetic energy fields, and Frisbee flight paths. What do humans understand?

Dear Heaven: More meatballs, less spaghetti, please.

Dear Heaven: Are there mailmen in Heaven? If there are, will I have to apologize?

Dear Heaven: Let me give you a list of just some of the things I must remember to be a good dog.

1. I will not eat the cats' food before they eat it or after they throw it up.

2. I will not roll on dead seagulls, fish, crabs, etc., just because I like the way they smell.

3 I will not munch on "leftovers" in the kitty litter box, although they are tasty.

4. The diaper pail is not a cookie jar.

5. The sofa is not a 'face towel'. Neither are Mom and Dad's laps.

6. The garbage collector is not stealing our stuff.

7. My head does not belong in the refrigerator.

8. I will not bite the officer's hand when he reaches in for Mom's driver's license and registration.

9. I will not play tug-of-war with Dad's underwear when he's on the toilet.

10. Sticking my nose into someone's crotch is an unacceptable way of saying "hello".

11. I don't need to suddenly stand straight up when I'm under the coffee table.

12. I must shake the rainwater out of my fur before entering the house, not after.

13. I will not throw up in the car.

14. I will not come in from outside and immediately drag my butt.

15. I will not sit in the middle of the living room and lick my crotch when we have company.

16. The cat is not a 'squeaky toy' so when I play with him and he makes that noise, it's usually not a good thing.

POOCHES IN S. FLA. LAPPING UP LUXURY
From diamond necklaces to happy hour, many South Floridians admit to spoiling their pets as they would their children.

Every Sunday evening, in the courtyard of a very swanky South Beach hotel, Nasdaq, Pancho and Bimini frolic as their owners exchange puppy tidbits while sipping on Dalmatian martinis and Pomeranian punch. Close by, Abbey, a Cavalier King Charles spaniel -- a local celebrity among the dog set -- has her book signings.

Happy hour here at the Hotel Victor has literally gone to the dogs.

Each morning in Key West, Holly, a sandy-colored cocker spaniel, strolls into the kitchen and laps up her daily dose of warm café con leche until the mug is doggie-bone dry. By nightfall, a robust cut of steak sits in her ceramic plate, warmed just so.

''I know, I know, she's spoiled but I can't help it,'' says owner Carol Simeon.

South Florida's humans, and much of the nation, are in the throes of a love affair with their dogs, who now outnumber newborns 14 to one in Miami-Dade County.

There are birthday parties and ''bark'' mitzvahs that are meticulously planned, replete with three-tiered cakes, kosher paté, party hats and favors, fine linens, candlelight, crystal dishes and soft music.

Even personalized wine labels for a preferred pooch, as advertised in the latest issue of Modern Dog.

There are trips to the spa, doggie daycare, layers of health insurance, designer clothing, Louis Vuitton, Gucci and Juicy Couture bags, pastel-colored strollers, Italian leather beds, playpens, organic foods.

This year, Americans will spend $38 billion on their pets, more than double the $17 billion spent a decade ago, according to the American Pet Products Manufacturing Association. Nearly six million Americans throw a soiree for their favorite cat, dog, fish or tarantula each year.

Kitty furball cough? Doggie depression?

Americans spent $160 million on pet insurance in 2005, compared with just $61.9 million in 2001, says Brian D. Iannessa, a spokesman with Veterinary Pet Insurance, one of the largest providers of pet insurance in the country. VPI sends a birthday card to each of its insured pets.

South Florida, with hundreds of thousands of cats and dogs registered in both Broward and Miami-Dade counties, has contributed handsomely to those national numbers.

THIRD IN NATION

Florida also ranks third in the nation in the number of dogs with medical insurance, according to Iannessa of VPI Pet Insurance.

''Our dogs have increasingly become an extension of ourselves,'' said Bob Vetere, president of the American Pet Products Manufacturing Association.

''I have been to a dog wedding where one dog had a tuxedo, the other a wedding dress. It was hysterical, but quite an innovative way for pets and owners to get together,'' Vetere said.

Not everyone lauds this level of extravagance. On their walks in Pembroke Pines with their miniature pocket pinschers Ginger Snap and Lulu Marie -- tucked inside their pink and red strollers -- Nicole Penny admits that she and and her husband, Sean, have been the subject of a few caustic stares.

'We've had one or two crazy looks from people who were probably saying to themselves, `What the hell are you thinking?' '' Penny said.

And Eric Nathal concedes his wife Mina's treatment of Pancho, an Italian greyhound, can be over the top.

''I think he's way too spoiled. She never reprimands, there's no discipline, he does anything he wants,'' says Nathal.

But for a peaceful life, Nathal says he's learned to give in.

The love affair, in particular for smaller dogs -- made popular by Paris Hilton, Britney Spears and other celebrities -- has had its drawbacks as demand rises.

A lawsuit recently was filed against the Pembroke Pines-based Wizard of Claws shop after several dog owners complained that the dogs purchased at the store fell ill.

Illnesses among the pups that sell for as much as $5,000 include some that develop from breeding puppies within the same family.

Florida Attorney General Charlie Crist has launched an investigation.

Jim Anderson, whose wife Gilda owns the store, has denied selling sick puppies.

Meanwhile, the pampering has spawned a cottage industry of new entrepreneurs. One, Lisa Balaam, has collaborated with Abbey the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, on a book about Abbey's jaunts on the Miami Beach boardwalk.

`LIKE OUR BABIES'

Others dream up new products, such as jeweled collars, lavish body creams and novelty T-shirts, and sell them through local stores.

''Many of these products come from people I sold pups to,'' says Eleanora Bonfini, owner of Tea Cups Puppies and Boutiques, a shop in Hollywood that's filled with canopy beds, designer dog carriers and jeweled collars.

''The industry is booming because they're like our babies, and we want to treat them like we would treat our children,'' Bonfini said.

For some, like Nicole and Sean Penny, they are just that -- a test run for parenthood.

''For us this was not as intense as having a kid,'' said Nicole Penny. ``We decided we would test the waters with Ginger Snap [and Lulu] first.''

Vetere says the empty-nest syndrome experienced by baby boomers and divorcees also has fueled the boom in pet ownership and pampering.

''A lot of pet owners are filling a void in their lives and they can afford to spend more,'' says Vetere.

``Marketers recognize that we make the purchasing decisions and that's why so many of the products are the things we want for ourselves -- organic foods, trips to the spa, even nail polish.''

Many owners see their dogs as an extension of themselves and shop accordingly -- from punk-rocker wear to hip-hop chic.

New Spa!

Hi 'Reeses fans!

I am looking so cute today!

Mommy and Daddy took me to a new "spa" today to get a new "Puppy Cut", bath (yuck!), nail trim and brushings. The new spa lady, Lou, was very nice, and when Mommy came to get me, I looked SO good!

When Daddy got home, I rushed out to show him my new super cute look!

We all then went to the Beacon Light Shopping Center so Mommy could hand over a CD with a new piece of artwork for the Local Magazine. While there I stopped into my favorite Boutique, Gigi and Luca. I have such a fun time every time I go in there.

I got to taste some new treats (Pizza and Honey and Cream flavors). I liked them both!!!!!

We all then stopped a a big Church Garage Sale where Mommy got a couple of items for the house!

I sat on Daddy's lap and looked out the window to make sure Mommy didn't get lost or go the wrong way home!

Such a fun day!

With legislators barking in the background, the Florida House gave final approval Wednesday to a bill that would allow dogs all across Florida to dine outdoors with their masters at restaurants.

Gov. Jeb Bush, owner of a black Labrador retriever named Marvin, seemed ready to sign the bill into law.

"I think people in certain conditions should be allowed to dine with their dogs," he said.

Under the measure (SB 1172), cities and counties would be allowed to issue dog-dining permits to restaurants for three years. After that, the practice will be evaluated.

Applicants would have to provide diagrams of the outdoor seating areas where dogs would be allowed and include hand sanitizers on tables. Waiters could not pet dogs while serving food. A clean-up kit would have to be kept nearby to deal with dog messes.

New Friend

Hi 'Reeses fans,

Did you know I have a new "friend", just like Brown Dog. Miss Brown Dog "Missy" arrived the day after my Birthday. I thought she was fun until I caught Missy and Brown Dog hanging out together!!!!!! Brown Dog is MY friend, and I didn't like that.

I had to show Missy who was the Top Dog. Missy understands now, and we are all starting to get along so much better.

I also love playing with my new rope toy. Here you can see me having fun playing with Daddy.

I hope you had a Fun Easter, Cedric and Danielle came over and we had a fun Bar-B-Que. I was sous-chef and helped Daddy with any food that fell "sous" the grill!!! :-)

Birthday Party

Hi 'Reeses Fans!

Wow!!! What a fun weekend this has been.

Yesterday we celebrated my 2nd Birthday, which is on Tuesday April 11, with a fun Popcorn and Pizza Party.

My brother Cedric and his girlfriend/Fiancee (depending on who who are talking to) Danielle came over and had Pizza, Popcorn for me!, Birthday cake, I even had one Birthday cake cookie! and fun times!!!!!

Earlier in the morning, Mommy, Daddy and I went over to my favorite Boutique, Gigi and Luca, to see what was new in the world of Puppy Fashion. The Boutique had sent me a Happy Birthday Card, offering me a free Birthday Cookie (the cookie cake in the picture) and 15% off of a purchase from the store.

I LOVE going to Gigi and Luca. So much to see, do and sniff in there!!!!! :-)

While I was checking out the latest fashions, Mommy was looking at a new line in Puppy Life Vests called "Paws Aboard".

I tried a couple on, and when Mommy found one that fit, she said I need to have it as I will be swimming in the pool more this year..... I'm not sure if I like that idea, but I do look very nautical in my new life vest.

After we got home, it wasn't long before Cedric and Danielle arrived and then Pizza came, and popcorn was popped. Hmmmm popcorn smells so "Yummy for my Tummy"!

We all had fun eating the pizza and popcorn. I had some of the popcorn, on my own special Birthday plate. We even had party hats and napkins!

After pizza and popcorn, everyone sang Happy Birthday to me, and Mommy blew out my candle for me, and then we all had cake, I had my special cake cookie. It was very yummy and I ate it all up!

Then I got to open Birthday presents. I love opening presents, it was like Christmas all over again!

I got a ball, rope pull, bag of treats, black and brown stuffed dog and a lion hand puppet. I didn't know what to play with first!

We all had a fun time playing with my new toys, and having our pictures taken.

Then we all watched "Cats & Dogs" on DVD. It is a funny movie, and remember Dogs Rule!!!

Later that evening, I went out for a nice walk with Daddy. I had such a fun day! I wonder what surprises are waiting for me on my Birthday this week!!!!!!!

New Furniture

Hi 'Reeses Fans!

We have a new look at home. New living room furniture. Nice soft comfy leather overstuffed cushions. I am not allowd on it (yet!) but I am working on Mommy to let me up to try out the sofa and give it my "sniff" of approval!

The new coffee table is really neat, it raises up so Mommy can use her laptop while sitting with Daddy, and me, without having to hunch over the coffee table and hurt her back or neck!

we also have a nice new soft bed for the guest room ready for when Granny comes to visit and my friends Jenny and Derek from England!

We gave the old furniture to Cedric and Danielle for their new home. I will have to go over there soon to check out how it looks in their home. I am so busy!!!!

New Flowers

Hi!

Mommy was soooo lucky yesterday.

Our Neighbors behind the rear fence are going back to Scotland tomorrow, and asked Mommy if she would like to have lots of flowers that they had in pots that they did not want to die off in the Sun.

Daddy & I took them over the fence, and set them in the new patio area. Today we watered them to keep them fresh.

Mommy is going to have so much fun planting them on Saturday, and I will help her with the planting too!

Devote time to your dog every day--take a walk, toss a ball, or go for a run. He'll be happier, and so will you.

I certainly love to play chase, fetch and go for a walk! Daddy does too!
